Heat and Health


1. Heatwaves, or heat and hot weather that can last for several days, can have a significant impact on society, including a rise in heat-related deaths. Heatwaves are among the most dangerous of natural hazards, but rarely receive adequate attention because their death tolls and destruction are not always immediately obvious.

2. Throughout a Heatwave keep yourself cool and hydrated

a. Drink water regularly. Avoid alcohol and too much caffeine and sugar

b. Eat small meals and eat more often

c. Wear light, loose-fitting cloths

d. Wear a hat or cap and sunglasses.

e. Take cool shower or baths

3. Throughout a Heatwave try to keep out of heat

a. Stay in the shade

b. Avoid going outside during the hottest time of the day

c. Avoid strenuous physical activities if you can

d. Do not leave children or animals in parked vehicles


4. If you feel unwell during Heatwave

a. Get help if you feel dizzy, weak, anxious or have intense thirst and headache

b. Move to cool place as soon as possible

c. Drink some water to rehydrate

d. Keep medicine below 25°C or in refrigerator (read the storage instructions on the packaging)


5. During a Heatwave help others who suffer from the heat

a. Check on family, friends, and neighbors who spend much of their time alone

b. Elderly or sick people living alone should be visited at least daily

c. Take a first-aid course to learn how to treat heat emergencies and other emergencies
