Cyclone ‘Amphan’ and more

1. "Amphan", pronounced as "Um-pun", means sky. The name was given by Thailand in 2004.

2. ‘Amphan’ became the strongest storm (161mph) ever recorded in the Bay of Bengal on 18th May 2020 night, though it has weakened slightly.

3.Nisarga (suggested by Bangladesh), Gati (India), Nivar (Iran), Burevi (Maldives), Tauktae (Myanmar) and Yaas (Oman) are name of next few cyclones to form in Indian ocean.

4. To form a cyclone, warm, moist air over the ocean rises upward from the near surface. As this air moves up away from the ocean surface, it leaves is less air near the surface. So basically as the warm air rises it causes an area of lower air pressure.

5. Forms over the warm ocean water of tropics. When the warm moist air over the water rises, it is replaced by cooler air. The cooler air will then warm and start to rise. The cycle caused huge storm clouds to form.

6. Moisture, unstable air lift- moisture in the air typically comes from the ocean and areas near warm ocean currents evaporate lots of moisture into air. As air lifts higher and higher it causes a storm cloud to grow taller and taller.

7. The main effects of a tropical cyclone include Heavy Rain and Floods, Strong Sustained wind and wind gust, large storm surges at landfall and tornadoes.

8. According to Meteorological Forecasting Division of Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, there is no direct effect of Cyclone AMPHAN in the case of Nepal, but its indirect impact will affect the weather in the country especially in the eastern and central regions for the next 3-4 days. There is a possibility of rain in some places in the eastern and central regions as well as snowfall in the high mountainous areas and increase in the water flow in the canals in the eastern and central regions.
